The Weather Center

The weather center will be a place in the classroom for students to readily access weather unit materials.  Primarily, the weather center will have children’s literature available for reading during free time.  These books are at the appropriate reading level for first graders.  There are multiple copies of some books for partner reading.  Other materials include news or Internet articles on the weather or other trade books, which may exhibit useful weather photographs.

The weather center will also have weather equipment like the rain gauge and a thermometer when not in use or if there are multiple items available.  At the same time, the weather center should be equipped with art supplies to encourage students to draw and write about the weather.  Students are encouraged to explore these materials in their own way.  And, finally, extra fun activities should be available, such as the weather crossword, file folder activities, writing ideas, and coloring activities.
