Introduction

Title of Lesson:  What are the Types of Weather?

Grade Level:  1

Materials:  The Magic School Bus Kicks Up a Storm” Video, large sheet of paper and marker, paper and pencils for each student

Purpose:  The purpose of this lesson is to access the student’s prior knowledge of the different kinds of weather or weather words.

Objectives:

Procedure:

1)      Pose the question to the class- What are some different types of weather?  Record answers on large sheet of paper (even if not correct).

2)      Show video.

3)      Revisit student’s answers on the web to check for accuracy.  When there are four types listed, students are given time to record these and others on their own. (5-8 minutes)

4)      Share back ideas.  Encourage students in the direction of those weather types that have been missed.

5)      Students finish copying weather types for their weather journal.  This web may be revisited for future reference.  The large web also is also displayed for future use.

Closure:  Teacher circulates to aid students with spelling or other questions.  With the remaining class time, students participate in a discussion of why they didn’t think of certain types of weather, but did think of the ones that they did.  Is it because some types are more common?  Or make a bigger impression on us?  Is it that we are more likely to think of weather types that match the season we are currently in?  What is the difference between weather types and seasons?  Are they the same thing?  Are there types of weather that are typical of different seasons?

Evaluation/ Student Assessment:  Evaluation will be based on student’s participation in classroom discussion and by their effort and success in creating the weather web for their journal.  The web will not be evaluated by total number or words correctly transferred onto paper.  Instead, ability to get an overall picture of weather with many of its components is satisfactory.

How this lesson fits with the Weather Unit:  This lesson is an introduction to weather.  It accesses prior knowledge and establishes a basis for the unit.  This web brings together most of what will be covered in our weather unit and displays it for future use.  It is seen as a foundation and a great attention getter.  The Magic School Bus Kicks Up a Storm is a fun way to begin the unit also.
