Title:  Reading Opportunity

Grade Level:  1

Materials:  Frog And Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel, pencil, crayons, lined paper

Purpose:  The purpose of this lesson is to give an above average student the opportunity to read at her level.  It will also test her retention level and ability to write about what she has read.

Objectives:

Procedure:

  1. First, ask pre-reading questions:  Who are the characters?  Where are they?  What kind of story?  What can you tell about it so far?
  2. Student reads chapter, giving reading clues when necessary.
  3. When finished teacher asks:  Who and what was the story about?  What happened?  How did the story end?  What did you like about it?

Closure:

Instruct student to write something about the story or what happened or what you liked. (1-3 sentences.)  Draw a picture of this also.

Assessment:  This experience is evaluated by ability to read this level of text.  She completed this text with only a few prompts needed.  She also showed an appropriate level of retention, and the ability to represent ideas properly with text and pictures.

Meeting the diverse needs of students:

This lesson was designed specifically for this reader.  This learner is advanced in comparison to her classmates, so this lesson is seen as an opportunity for her to read at her level.  At times we feel she is unchallenged.  I chose a text fitting to her reading ability.  She read it without much difficulty and successfully summarized the events of the story, supporting our belief that she was not only a good reader, but also that she would be able to comprehend the story as well.  Then through the drawing and the writing done, she illustrated what she liked about the story.

This fits into the curriculum:  because all of the other students also get the opportunity to read in small groups periodically.  Therefore, this is a special opportunity for this student, however all students will have a similar opportunity.  It is part of the reading curriculum.

This student very much enjoyed this reading opportunity.  We so commonly worry that students of lesser ability will get the added one on one attention they need, but this is an example where a student benefited from the chance to perform at her level.  We would like to do this kind of reading opportunity more often.
