Title: Who turned out the lights?
Grade: Intermediate Elementary
Materials: Paper, pencil, blackboard
Purpose: The
purpose of this lesson is to show the students that all inventions are
solutions to everyday problems and help them realize that they too can be
inventors. We want the students to get
past the stereotypes of what makes an inventor.
Objectives:
- The
learner will come to a conclusion that inventions are solutions in
everyday problems by brainstorming problem ideas.
- TLW
work cooperatively with a group of three classmates while developing
different problem ideas.
- TLW
accumulate many problems and problem solving ideas by distinguishing what
is a solvable problem.
- TLW
express and communicate their problem and its possible solutions through a
picture and written explanation.
Procedure:
- Turn
off the classroom lights and tell kids that we have a problem. I want to turn the lights back on, but
don’t us want to get out of our seats.
How can we solve this problem?
- As a
class brainstorm ideas and write them on the board
- Explain
to the entire class that in small pre-assigned groups of three, that they
are supposed to brainstorm everyday problems and think up possible
solutions that would help eliminate the problem or make it less prevalent.
- When
students are in their small groups, hand out what is a problem sheet to
help guide the students in the right direction.
- When
they have accumulated a list of problems and solutions, have them select
their favorite one to draw the solution and write a paragraph about how it
will help solve the problem.
- If
there is time, share their drawings and paragraphs in front of the class
or in small groups.
