Grade:  K-1

Driver’s License School

Materials:  Driver’s Licenses (Rectangle piece of paper for each child with their name on it)

Purpose:  The purpose of this lesson is to have students safely practice many different loco motor skills while participating in a fun physical activity.

Objectives:

The learner will demonstrate different loco motor skills by using correct mechanics upon being directed to do them 90 percent of the time.

The learner will demonstrate good sportsmanship and safety by not invading the personal space of others when given the direction to demonstrate a loco motor skill 90 percent of the time.

The learner will demonstrate their ability to follow directions and conform to rules by “freezing” upon command and switching to the new command 90 percent of the time.

Procedure:

a) Students are to stay in line against the wall as they enter the gym.  The teacher greets each student while checking that each student is properly attired for the activity. (1 minute)

b) Upon reaching the end of the line students are instructed to jog around the outer edges of the gym. (2-3 minutes).

c)      Students are instructed to form a semi circle so they can all see the teacher.  Quickly review what it means to travel safely around the gym.

d)      Rules given:  Teacher is described as the police officer.  It is the student’s goal to earn a driver’s license (to do so they need to make 2 or fewer violations of the safe driving rule which is no bumping into others and freezing when they hear “freeze” which will be called out after demonstrating each motor movement). (Explanation 1-2 minutes)

e)      Teacher says, “Let’s all be safe drivers and earn our licenses!  The speed limit now is 30 mph, so walk”…after 90 seconds…”Now freeze.”  Students stop for the next command (teacher demonstrates each when saying the commands for emphasis)

Repeat this for these commands remembering to say freeze to go to the next:

Bumpy road - skipping

Narrow road- galloping

School crossing- walk really slow

Road construction- hop, take a few steps and hop again

Interstate driving- run

Out of gas- take a break and sit where you are

Stuck in the mud- stand up and jump in place

Get going again and its icy- slide around the gym

Students choose their favorite one to demonstrate for this one

End the sequence with school crossing again to slow the pace (total of 13-15minutes, may improvise how many different skills according to time)

From here instruct them back to the semi circle to sit

c) Pass out licenses and suggest students decorate them in their free time to look like real license plates.  Ask for student’s reflections of the game while allowing to cool down and take turns getting a drink (three at a time to the fountain and back).  Does anyone know of other loco motor skills would be appropriate for this game?  Did we practice safety and follow rules? And, if they do well, praise them and if not make suggestions for change.  If there are any loco motor skills that need reinforcement, this is a good time. (3-5 minutes)

-Kids line up and teacher walks them back to class.

d) Evaluation:

I am looking for 90 percent correct performance in loco motor skills.  Scanning the group each time, gauge their performance.  If students have fun, follow rules, stay safe, and demonstrate their ability to perform to loco motor skills while getting exercise, I will know that this activity is successful.
